Monthly Grocery Shopping– February 2020

February 20, 2020 by Stephanie 5 Comments

If you’re curious what a typical grocery haul looks like for a frugal family of 8, then keep reading.  Today I’m sharing what we bought in our monthly grocery shopping trip in February.  We went to Winco and Sam’s Club and spent right around $300.  That leaves about $150 for other grocery/food purchases for the month.

I took December and January off from sharing grocery hauls, mostly because I was posting new videos and blog posts nearly every day in those months for the Christmas Series and the Frugal Fresh Start Challenge.

In case you’re wondering how all of these grocery items fit into a menu, the truth is they don’t.  I don’t shop from a menu, I just buy what we are out of or running low on.  Since I cook mostly from scratch, I can make any of our regular meals when we’re stocked up on staples.

I also like to buy ahead and stock up when I find great deals.  That means I don’t buy everything every month.  So while we do eat meat, you will notice there isn’t much in this haul.  We do have some meat in the deep freeze though.

As usual, you can either watch or listen to me go through everything we bought in the quick video below, or you can just check out the items and complete price list below the video.

Winco Grocery Haul– $163

  • Frozen Blueberries (16 oz) $1.88 x 3 = $5.64

  • Chocolate Chips (4.5 lbs) $8.92
  • Peanut Butter (Two 40 oz jars) $6.98  x 4 = $27.92
  • Raisins (3.75 lb) $8.98

If you have any questions about how we handle grocery shopping or our food budget, I am happy to answer them in the comments or even make a video on the topic.  Just let me know in the comments.

We spent less than $100 on groceries this month as I decided to do a eat up all we have month. I noticed that every month we were shopping and getting more and more and not eating all we already had. We cooked all our meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) from home and used quite a bit. What we did spend was on fresh fruit and veg and milk. March has me hoping for great meat and frozen veg sales! I need to restock my freezers.

I’m always impressed with your shopping budget. We’ve spent quite a bit of money on groceries in February, because it’s been too long since we properly stocked up our pantry. All those cans and jars, plus some very good deals on meat, mean that our cupboards and fridge and freezer are now very, very full – which is a shame because my favourite discount store has an excellent deal on ice cream next week! My children are real troopers, though, and have promised that if I come home with a bulk deal on ice cream, they’ll do their best to eat any ice cream that can’t fit in the freezer before it melts. If only all kids were as dutiful as mine.

They’re the sort of children who like to sacrifice for others. Clearly I’m doing something right as their mother. You are so lucky to be married to a husband who is equally dutiful. Not everyone would eat ice cream to save us money.
